Totem is a character in Ustwo's adventure puzzle game Monument Valley. They are Ida's friend and help her through many of the puzzles, as she can climb on them to access new areas. The player can control Ida by tapping the screen in front of her, but can also control Totem by dragging them around.

Appearance[]

Totem is a yellow totem pole, four blocks tall, with turquoise geometric designs and a big purple-and-white eyeball on the top block. There are Draggers on their bottom two blocks that allow them to move.

Monument Valley[]

Ida first finds Totem in The Labyrinth. Together they solve the puzzles throughout the level. At the end, the platform the pedestal is on breaks off from the wall behind it and begins drifting into the ocean, with Ida on it. Totem tries to follow her, but soon sinks into the water. Totem is next seen in The Descent. Ida starts the level on a small island in the middle of a stormy ocean. However, when Totem rises up from the ocean, the storm clears, since Ida is happy to see them. They briefly help Ida get to the next door and are not seen for the rest of the game, though they are present in the ending screen.

Forgotten Shores[]

In Forgotten Shores, Totem shows up in The Chasm. As Ida is sinking into the lava at the bottom of the chasm, Totem appears and helps her escape. They are also in The Lost Falls, again helping Ida through the level's challenges. Near the end, there is a crushing platform blocking Ida's path. Totem tries to support it on their head like they have done with similar platforms in this level, but this platform keeps crushing until Totem breaks apart and falls into the darkness below.

The final level of Forgotten Shores, Nocturne, is dedicated entirely to putting Totem back together. Ida finds all four of their "blocks" and brings them to four Lights at the center of the area. Giant ice stairs appear and when Ida climbs all the way to the top, the ground around her falls away to reveal a repaired Totem inside. Ida returns the piece of Sacred Geometry and the two of them look to the sky, ending the level.
