Morning Rundown: Pirates lose sixth straight, Bradenton wins on walk-off in extra-innings (1)

Despite scoring first, the Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t stop their losing streak that now extends to six games after losing to the Boston Red Sox 6-1 on Sunday.

The Pirates managed seven hits, but committed two errors and only scored a single run. Ke’Bryan Hayes picked up a pair of hits, including driving in the first run of the game. Jack Suwinski also picked up two hits while Connor Joe registered the only extra-base hit.

Martin Perez had generally been solid for the Pirates this year, but had more of a rough outing on Sunday. He walked four while allowing four earned runs across four innings.

The bullpen gave up two unearned runs over the final five innings pitched.

Aroldis Chapman returned to the mound after his suspension and struck out the side in the eighth, while also walking a hitter and allowing one of the unearned run.

It’s been a rough year for the Bradenton Marauders, who have won just three of their 15 games this year.

Their latest win was in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion, as they clawed back from deficits in the ninth and and tenth innings, eventually winning on a walk-off hit.

Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, down to their last out, Omar Alfonzo doubled home Jeral Toledo before Javier Rivas followed that up with another double to tie the game.

Heading into extra-innings Daytona took the lead in the top of the 10th 7-5. After Shalin Polanco walked to put a pair of runners on, Garret Forrester just missed a walk-off three-run home run, bouncing a double off the wall.

Juan Jerez tied the game with a double before Jesus Castillo won it with a single.

Javier Rivas entered the day with the worst wRC+ among all qualified hitters in the minors, but put together a career day at the plate.

He picked up three extra-base hits, including his first home run of the season. His double in the bottom of the ninth tied the game up with two outs.

Bucs On DeckLonnie White Jr: Consistency key to breakoutHe never coached him in Greensboro, but watching Lonnie White Jr. play takes me back to the conversation I had with now Altoona skipper Robby Hammock late last season. I asked him what one of the biggest adjustments players have to make as they move up from level to level, specifically from Single-to-High-A, is that that’s where he was managing at the time…Read more2 days ago · 2 likes · 3 comments · Anthony Murphy
