How to make Philly chicken cheesesteaks:

  • Preheat the skillet. Warm up a large skillet or griddle over medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).
  • Add the oil and butter. Place the tablespoon of butter and oil in the middle of the griddle or skillet. Spread it around so that it can melt.
  • Slice the peppers and onions. Add the peppers and onions to the skillet or griddle. Toss them to coat them in the oil and butter.

Sauté for 3-5 minutes until peppers are cooked to your preference. Remove them from the griddle or skillet to a separate plate.

  • Cook the chicken. Add the chicken to the same griddle or skillet. Spread it out to a thin layer. Season the chicken with the Italian seasoning, salt and pepper.

Let the chicken sear for 3-5 minutes until the juices start to flow. Flip and then use your spatula to chop into smaller pieces. Continue cooking the chicken until is cooked through (2-3 more minutes).

  • Mix in the veggies with the chicken. Then add the peppers and onions back into the same pan or on the griddle. Top the chicken and peppers with onions with the sliced cheese. Cover with a lid and allow the cheese to melt.
  • Toast the hoagie rolls. Use a spatula to scoop and lift the cheesy chicken and veggie mixture onto each of the toasted hoagie rolls.
  • Serve warm. Serve this chicken philly sandwich immediately while warm and enjoy!

What to serve with chicken philly cheesesteaks:

  • French Fries.Homemade fries always combine perfectly with these cheesesteaks.
  • Salad. Lighten things up and pair the sandwich with a garden salad.
  • Onion Rings. Homestyle onion rings are amazing with this recipe.

How to store:

Store the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. The meat and veggie mixture will need to be stored separately from the rolls.

It is a great lunch the next day and a tasty alternative to takeout. We like to go ahead and portion the meat into individual containers.

I also place a roll in a bag or container. Then everything is ready to grab and go the next day.

Leftover Philly Cheesesteak Chicken:

  • Low Carb option. Skip the bread and enjoy the meat and veggies alone. It is fantastic.
  • Over rice. Top rice with the leftover meat and veggie mixture.
  • Pasta dish. Stretch leftover meat and combine with penne pasta, elbow or anything you like.

Ingredient variations:

  • Cheese. We used provolone but try white American cheese or cheeze whiz for more tasty options.
  • Seasoning. Garlic powder pairs nicely with the Italian seasoning.
  • Veggies. In addition to the cooked onions and peppers, mushrooms tastes great on cheese steak.
  • Meat. Substitute chicken for beef or your favorite cut of steak.
  • Spicy. Add a little heat to the recipe by adding hot sauce or siracha sauce to mayo and spreading on the bun.
  • Chicken thighs. Substitute chicken thighs for chicken breasts in this recipe. It will still taste delicious.
  • Bread. This recipe traditionally uses hoagie rolls. However, if you have children, try using rolls or slider buns. This is perfect for small hands.

Chicken Philly Cheese Steaks tips:

  • Oil. We used avocado oil but you can easily use vegetable oil, canola oil or coconut oil instead.
  • Serve warm. These are best served immediately while warm.
  • Sturdy Bread. Always use a sturdy type of bread that can withstand the juice from the chicken. The meat and veggies are heavy.
