Celebrating Local Creators: Bard Mom (2024)

Hey folks!

Somehow it’s already the last Friday in April, and we’re struggling to wrap our heads around how fast the year is going, but that won’t stop us from delivering a brand-spanking fresh newsletter chockful of your favorite updates.

This week, we’re showcasing the community with a spotlight on one of the creators who will be at our Showcase on May 18th. We’re hoping to feature a different creator each week up until the show, so contact the shop if you haven’t secured your table yet!

Sorry to bother you, but one quick ask before you scroll further. Newsletters like ours thrive by the algorithms, and we need your help. If you could take a minute and like, comment, and share our post, you can help get the word out and keep us growing!

CLIMBING TO MYTHIC IN OUTLAWS DRAFT

- written by some old Magic boomer

Outlaws of Thunder Junction is proving to be one of the most incredible draft formats possibly ever, with absurdly high power levels matched by an appropriate amount of removal and interaction delivering in-game thrills and matches that feel closer to old Block Constructed duels than recent Limited experiences.

I’m technically currently in Diamond, not quite Mythic yet, but the title is still accurate, gosh darn it, and I thought it’d be fun to share some examples of the archetypes I’ve been having the most success with.

Tried-and-true Boros Aggro has a slightly different flavor in Thunder Junction, as you actually have a number of tricky uncommons and commons that can allow you to play a less full-court-press style and adapt to what your opponent is doing. Of course, sometimes you also get 2 Bruse Tarls, and then you just win a bunch.

This is an example of what happens when no one else in the draft has any idea what is going on. I didn’t lose a single game with this Azorius Control build, and none of them were even remotely close. You should obviously not count on ever getting a draft like this (3 Jems? Fblthp? 2 Wranglers?! 2 freaking Stitchers!?) but it does illustrate what the normal Azorius deck is looking for. Just shave some of the absurd numbers down and play on your opponent’s turn and you’ll be on your way to a trophy.

Whereas Rakdos Aggro builds will all pretty much look something similar to this, although you might get luckier than I did this go around and actually snag some of the powerful archetype-enhancing enchantments like At Knifepoint, Rakish Crew, and Brimstone Roundup.

Do you enjoy these types of quick-hit Limited articles? Would you read a whole newsletter about Magic stuff? Let me know in the comments!

WEEKLY BLOG — COMMUNITY CREATOR SHOWCASE: Q&A WITH KATHRYN, RESIDENT BARD MOM

If you would, please, introduce yourself and share a little of your creative background!

I'm Kathryn, also known as Bard Mom on my social media platforms. I started playing Dungeons & Dragons for the first time about 5 years ago and haven't stopped! I have always loved creating and moved from hobby to hobby, never really finding one that stuck until now.

What sort of things do you create?

I loved D&D so much that I wanted to create items and resources to help players and Dungeon Masters with their campaigns. I started mixing up potions for props in the game and then making them into magical items that could be used in the game.

Then, I wanted to make it easier for DMs to plan their campaigns and stay organized. Thus, my initiative tracker and DM Binder were born. From there it spiraled into dice-rolling healing potions, necklaces, and then the player binder.

When’d you first start coming to Comic World? What’s your fav hobby on our shelves?

I started coming to Comic World years ago when it was located on JFK.

I loved all the games that they had but it wasn't until they moved to their current location that I really felt that sense of community.

Every time I go, I always check out the local artist spot to see what's new. Dice are my downfall! I also love checking out the D&D props as well as the board games.

We love playing games in my house, especially the ones that are rarely heard of. To have my work being sold in a local shop blows my mind sometimes and it means so much to me that a local game store is supporting so many local artists.

Where can folks find your work?

I do have a storefront on Kofi and people can connect with me on tiktok as well as Instagram. Links are down below. My tiktok is updates and just all around D&D fun! I really just want people to ask me about my campaign so I can lore-drop and spill secrets that my players are trying to figure out.

Come see me and my cool stuff at the Creator Showcase and ask me about my lore!

OUTRO

With any luck, all these late April showers will herald those gorgeous May flower blooms, and we’ll be in for a fun little spring before the hottest summer ever hits us according to gamblers — I mean, weatherpersons. In any case, enjoying the warmer weather with an outdoor jaunt is free, just like subscribing to this newsletter. And you can even read along as you walk!

Thanks again for reading, let us know what you thought of this week’s issue, and we’ll see you next time!
