Chiefs’ Travis Kelce to host celebrity-laden spinoff of ‘Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?’ | CBS

“I grew up loving game shows, and I’m excited to be following in the footsteps of so many TV icons by hosting my very first one with Are you Smarter than a Celebrity?,” the three-time Super Bowl champion said in a statement. ”The original show is a great success, so to be bringing a new format with everyone’s favorite celebrities to the screen, will definitely be entertaining. I’m just happy to be on the hosting side of the equation here and excited to see how these famous faces keep up.”

The show, which will stream on Amazon Prime Video, will feature a contestant trying to win a $100,000 prize by answering 11 questions on a range of subjects pulled from an elementary school curriculum. There will be a classroom full of celebrities who can help the contestant, but toward the end of the game only one of them will be able to help answer the final question, which will come from a sixth grade curriculum.

Patrick Mahomes hadn’t run this play all year — until it helped Chiefs win Super Bowl | Kansas City Star

This was third-and-2 at the San Francisco 43-yard line, with 48 seconds left in regulation of Super Bowl LVIII. The Chiefs trailed 19-16, and if they were stopped on this down, they’d have to decide between a potential game-tying 60-yard field-goal attempt or a fourth down on offense with the season on the line.

KC had its play-call set. Mahomes lifted his leg to survey the defense, then noticed something in his peripheral vision.

The 49ers, who hadn’t blitzed most of the game, had extra defenders on the line of scrimmage. They were about to bring pressure.

In short, the Chiefs’ play from the huddle was not going to work.

Mahomes still knew he had a check he could go to. The team had discussed using it if he ever saw a particular blitz.

The only problem? Mahomes had no in-season evidence — over 21 games — that this play was going to work.

“All year long, we never got the look that we wanted,” Mahomes said. “And then all of a sudden you get in the Super Bowl — a third down, in a huge moment in the game — and of course, you get the exact look you’re thinking about.”

The Chiefs had practiced this audible in training camp, then maybe twice a month during the regular season, just in case. Coaches also showed a picture of the play in meetings before each game, just as a refresher in case the Chiefs needed to break glass in case of emergency.

Mahomes went for that here. He frantically started flicking his hand and wrist to signal the call to his teammates. The message, in essence: “Don’t run the previous play. Let’s go with this man-to-man killer instead.”

Chiefs center Creed Humphrey said something to right guard Trey Smith next to him, then motioned with his arm to make sure he received the message.

And after the snap, it became clear: The Chiefs were plenty ready for the unexpected.

The screen pass to Jerick McKinnon worked as intended. The Chiefs’ offensive line left the correct defender on the right side unblocked, allowing Mahomes to know exactly where the pressure was coming from. McKinnon also faked a block on that player — the Chiefs had shown cross-protection like this most of the game — before bluffing and running around him to the vacant space that was supposed to be there.

Top 10 Players Who Could Be Traded During the 2024 NFL DraftG Trey Smith | Kansas City Chiefs | Pro Football Network

The Chiefs will be gunning for their third straight Super Bowl next season, so they might not be willing to move a key contributor like right guard Trey Smith. But Kansas City won’t be able to pay everyone and could think about getting something for Smith rather than letting him walk next offseason.

Left guard Joe Thuney and right tackle Jawaan Taylor are already among the league’s highest-paid linemen, while center Creed Humphrey will likely join them soon. Smith could be the odd man out. The Chiefs might receive a compensatory pick for Smith in 2025, but only if they mostly sit out the 2024 free agent market.

Chiefs 2024 NFL Draft prospect per day: Georgia S Javon Bullard | Fox 4 News

Fit with Chiefs

Bullard is an athletic safety who could be a defensive coordinator’s favorite player in the right system with his versatility.

Bullard has fluid hips that allow him to flat-foot read plays as a safety across the middle of the field. His hips combined with his speed give him the range to play as a deep high safety as well and he has supreme ball skills to go with it.

Bullard is one of the most physical safeties in the draft. He is eager to come downhill in the run game and has the play recognition to diagnose plays. Bullard also knocked Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. out of the 2023 College Football Playoff semifinals which helped Georgia’s comeback in the win.

He struggled a bit when he played at slot cornerback against shiftier receivers. Teams may also knock him for his size but the height shouldn’t be a concern with how well he plays. Even when he is in trail coverage, Bullard has the speed and skills to recover and make a play.

Colts’ Shane Steichen: QB Anthony Richardson ‘in a really good spot’ months after shoulder surgery | NFL.com

One week ago, Anthony Richardson stated he’s ”on a mission” to get back to playing football.

For those seeking a sitrep, Colts coach Shane Steichen obliged Tuesday.

“He’s in a really good spot,” Steichen said of Richardson. “Had really good discussions that I’ll obviously keep private, but he’s in a really good spot. Shoulder is feeling good. Should be good to go for practices like we talked about earlier. He’ll be out there throwing, but we’ll limit. We’ll obviously monitor it, makes sure we’re smart with that, but he’s in a really good place.”

This was the outcome the Colts had in mind when they made the difficult decision to shut down Richardson after one month of remarkably promising play in order for him to undergo surgery. The eye was always on the future, and after grinding out the last six and a half months, Richardson is, as Steichen said, in a great place.

How much will Xavier Worthy’s 40-yard dash record influence NFL Draft? Why talent evaluators might care more than you think | Yahoo! Sports

Ahead of next week’s NFL Draft, teams are debating: How much does the 40-yard dash actually translate to today’s game, and how much should they thus let it influence their draft boards?

Are disappointing careers from previous 40-yard dash record-breakers, including 2017 first-round pick John Ross whose record Worthy broke, a trend to behold warily? Or does drawing a parallel based on 40 speed alone oversimplify what Worthy can offer?

One AFC scout said in a phone conversation that teams should show skepticism toward a 40 when its data diverges from a prospect’s film. That’s not the case with Worthy.

“It lined up with his game speed and what I felt about how he plays the game,” the AFC scout told Yahoo Sports. “He’s not gonna be John Ross. This guy is like a f***ing good player.

“He just so happens to be fast as s***.”

Courtland Sutton skips start of Broncos voluntary workouts, per report | CBS Sports

The 28-year-old wideout has done a lot with a little during his time in Denver. Despite the Broncos’ lack of consistency at the quarterback position, Sutton has been a productive player since breaking into the NFL in 2018. He made the Pro Bowl in 2019 and caught 10 touchdowns last season despite ranking just 56th in the league in targets.

Sutton has continued to produce following a torn ACL injury early in the 2020 season. This season, he’s slated to enter the top-10 in career franchise marks for receptions, yards, and touchdown receptions. Unlike many players who are currently ahead of him, Sutton has spent the majority of his career without a Hall of Fame quarterback throwing him the ball.

Sutton has been the subject of trade speculation over the last several years, along with former teammate Jerry Jeudy. While Jeudy was ultimately traded to Cleveland this offseason, Sutton has remained in Denver, where he continues to toil inside an offense that is still without a franchise quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes expects a ‘different’ Hollywood Brown with Chiefs in 2024

Among the topics was new wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who joined the team in free agency last month. His new quarterback likes what he has seen so far from the 25th overall selection of the 2019 NFL Draft.

“With Hollywood,” Mahomes observed, “obviously, you see the speed instantly. What I’ve liked so far is how hard he works. He’s been running good in the workouts with the route running. And he wants more — he wants to continue to push himself more and more. I think he’ll have a great role in this offense the way he’s able to run rounds [and] the way he’s able to stretch the field.”

While Brown is entering his sixth season, Mahomes anticipates the unexpected when the wideout finally suits up in red and gold.

“I think it’ll be even different than you’ve seen him before,” the face of the league predicted, “because I think we can use him in different ways that I think he hasn’t been utilized yet.”
